The 3-2-1 backup strategy is a well-regarded approach to ensure the safety and longevity of your data, including photos. At The Digital Curator, we are members of The Photo Managers Industry Association and this is the best practice for keeping your photos and digital documents safe.
Here’s is the suggested method for you:
- Three Copies of Your Data: Have at least three copies of your photos. This typically includes the original file and two additional backups. This redundancy helps protect against data loss from hardware failures or accidental deletion.
- Two Different Types of Storage: Store your backups on at least two different types of media. For example:
- Local Storage: External hard drives, USB drives, or network-attached storage (NAS).
- Cloud Storage: Services like Google Photos, Dropbox, Amazon Photos or iCloud. Cloud storage provides off-site backup and helps protect against local disasters like fire or theft.
- One Copy Offsite: Keep one backup copy in a different location from your primary and secondary copies. This could be a cloud service (which is inherently offsite) or an external drive stored in a different physical location, like a safe deposit box or a friend’s house.
Practical Tips for Implementing the 3-2-1 Strategy
